Exposing 9 Harmful Myths About Hiring a Christian Copywriter
Okay, friend – pull up a chair, we need to talk. Running your business is NO small feat – especially if it’s also a ministry, you’re a parent, or you’re trying to hang onto any kind of social life. Believe me, I know that crazy rat race. 🥵
You’re the CEO, the accountant, the social media manager, the tech support, the customer service team, and – yup – you’re also the marketing department. All at once. All you. No wonder your coffee gets cold.
If you’ve ever balked at the thought of hiring outside marketing or copywriting help, I understand. Fear, guilt, unknowns, straight-up overwhelm – it all gets really loud and starts driving the bus.
I can’t tell you how many clients I’ve worked with who said things like this:
🗣️ “I should be able to do this myself.”
🗣️ “I can’t justify the cost right now.”
🗣️ “I don’t even know where to start.”
🗣️ “I don’t want to sound cheesy or salesy.”
Sound familiar?
These hesitations are SUPER common. But sadly, they are the very lies that keep amazing, driven business owners like you stuck and spinning your wheels.
It’s time we call them out and unpack the truth. You might just walk away with some new clarity and permission to release pressure you were never meant to carry in the first place.
Myth #1: “I Should Be Able To Do This Myself.”
Ohhhh, we’re starting with a doozy. I hear this one a LOT – and sometimes I’m even tempted to believe it too!
That sneaky little voice whispers, “You started this thing – you should be able to keep it running, right? If you were committed, you wouldn’t need someone else’s help.”
In ministry, especially, that “do it all yourself” pressure gets cranked up twenty notches. We’re expected to wear exhaustion and fatigue like a badge of honor. 😩 But you’re already wearing 17 hats and dealing with things you never dreamed would be part of the job. (Hello, late-night tech issues.)
And when you think about asking someone for help, that niggly little feeling of guilt pops up. “If you were really stewarding God’s calling well, you wouldn’t need anyone else.”
Ugh. This lie makes me mad and sad all at once.
The Truth:
Let me just gently bust that myth right away: you were never meant to do it all yourself.
I’m not exaggerating when I say that trying to do it all slows you down. 📉 And that does not mean you’re a failure – it just means you’re a human being!
God didn’t design you or me to be a one-person show. He built our talents and strengths into the body of Christ, each person humbly doing what He uniquely created us to do.
That includes the copywriters and marketers who wake up excited to do the very thing that drains you. It frees you up to focus on the passion God gave you, and that’s where your fire and motivation set your business apart from the rest. 🚀
Good stewardship means handing it off to someone equipped to carry it well. Not white-knuckling and hoping it magically comes together before you burn out.
Myth #2: “I Can Save Money if I Do It Myself.”
Ah, yes, the good old “budget-friendly” approach. I hear you. Hiring someone feels like splurging on luxury, especially when you track every dollar like a hawk and try to be frugal. I sure know how that feels!
Yes, technically, you can write your own copy. No one’s stopping you from DIYing your website, emails, or launch strategy, fueled by a triple-shot latte and glassy-eyed determination. 😵💫
BUT – just because you can write words on a page doesn’t mean it will benefit your business.
While it looks like you’re saving money on the front end, here’s what’s going on behind the scenes:
You spend HOURS writing and rewriting things that never sound quite right, neglecting other important parts of the business. ⌛
You do your best, launch your copy, and get incredibly disappointing results.
Your business isn’t gaining traction, no matter how much time and energy you sink into writing. 🥀
You do it all over again.
You’re frustrated, drained, and stressed. 🪫
And here’s the worst part: while you argue with your cursor, your dream clients are scrolling past and clicking away because the message didn’t stick. 😫
SO FRUSTRATING.
The Truth:
Yes, DIY sounds cheaper. But if your words don’t actively convert leads, you’re losing SO much more than you’ll ever save.
A smart investment in Christian copywriting saves you gobs of money long-term by:
😍 Attracting your ideal client – the ones who are PERFECT for your business.
📈 Increasing email, social media, ad, and website conversions.
🔋 Freeing up your time to focus on the life-giving parts of your business, resulting in faster growth because you love what you’re doing!
Instead of asking, “What will this cost me?” I encourage you to consider, “What’s my unclear messaging already costing me? How many leads am I losing right now?”
Myth #3: “I Need To Wait Until I’m More Established.”
In other words, “I’m too overwhelmed to be overwhelmed right now.” 😅
This one comes up a LOT. And it makes sense! When your brain is swimming with a hundred half-baked ideas, a never-ending to-do list, and 72 tabs open (mentally and literally), hiring a Christian copywriter feels like one more thing to figure out.
So instead, you freeze.
You stall.
“Just let me grow a little more, make a little more money, get my act together, survive this busy season, etc., etc.”
In the words of the infamous Jan Levinson-Gould, “There are always a million reasons not to do something.” (Anyone else nerd out on The Office, or just me? 🙋🏻♀️)
But seriously, there will NEVER be a day you feel ready. There’s always a “just wait until.”
The Truth:
Waiting until you’re “more established” to invest in excellent copywriting sounds responsible, but it almost actually delays the very growth you’re so eagerly waiting for.
👉 Strong copywriting and marketing IS the vessel you need to become established.
To grow.
To make more money.
To get your act together.
To help you survive the busyness.
Copywriting IS the way to get more eyes on your work, more clients through the door, and more sales in your wallet.
Waiting to invest in expert marketing and copywriting is like sitting on the shore with your paddle in hand, saying, “I’ll start rowing once I’m across the lake.” 🫣
If you cut marketing and copywriting out to “save it for later,” you’re dismantling the only vessel that can carry you to where you want to go.
Myth #4: “I Don’t Want to Sound Cheesy. No One Else Can Capture My Voice.”
Ohhh, I feel this one deep in my soul.
We’ve all read something “professionally written” and thought, “Yikes. I never want to visit this site again. I would NEVER say it like that.”
And it’s fair that you’re hesitant.
There is bad copy out there. It’s salesy, cheesy, robotic, and erodes your clients’ trust. 😣
I know you don’t want that! You work HARD to build trust with your audience. You poured yourself into this business – your heart, tone, and personality. The last thing you want is to sound like a corporate memo from 2004. 🤖
The Truth:
You’re absolutely right to care about your voice. I support your discretion and caution.
But good Christian copywriters are well-trained to mirror your voice perfectly.
Here’s how I do that:
Voice-match – I listen – really listen – to how you talk, write, joke, explain, and relate.
Research – I dig into your old writings – blogs, emails, social media – scouring your content for information on your voice, style, and natural tendencies. (And no, I’m not stalking you! 😂)
Ask the right questions – I dig into what lights you up, what you avoid, and how you naturally communicate with your people.
Collaborate and refine – You get to review everything and make sure it truly sounds like YOU!
My goal is never to change or replace your voice. Your message and voice are already powerful! My job is to hold a megaphone to it so you can reach more people. 📣
Your voice is magnetic to your ideal client! Sometimes the volume just needs to be turned up. 🔊
Please don’t let the fear of sounding “off” keep you from looking for expert copywriting help. A good Christian copywriter will honor your voice and crank up the volume without making you sound inauthentic.
Myth #5: “I Need to Figure Out My Messaging Before I Hire a Christian Copywriter.”
This makes me chuckle – and I say that with love. 🫶
In other words, this myth basically says, “I need to clean my whole house before I let the cleaner in.”
Which is the whole reason you called the cleaner in the first place. See the irony here? 😅
You’re not alone, though. Soooo many Christian business owners feel like they have to have everything lined up before hiring help. A crystal-clear brand message, a tidy elevator pitch, and a robust email list.
Sadly, this is a BIG reason so many wonderful Christian businesses are stuck in a dead-end strategy with no growth and no traction.
The Truth:
You do NOT have to figure it all out first.
That’s my job. That’s what I do. ☺️
Christian copywriters don’t take your perfectly organized ideas and make them sound cute. We sit in the mess with you and help turn your cloudy ideas into a clear, motivating message that people respond to. 💡
A Christian copywriter is SOOOOO much more than just a writer. We’re your partner – in marketing, in messaging, in scaling, in ongoing strategy.
In short, this looks like:
🧵 Helping untangle the genius spaghetti in your brain.
🎯 Pulling out the gold in your story, your offer, and your heart.
📣 Shaping it all into copy that sounds like YOU and connects with THEM.
Personally, this is my favorite part of the job.
I LOVE diving into your vision, helping you thin out the weeds, and funneling your beautiful, chaotic ideas into measurable results. There’s nothing better than the lightbulb moment when I bridge the gap between your creativity and their imminent needs.
So don’t rob me of the best part, okay? 😉
Myth #6: “People Won’t Take Me Seriously if I Don’t Write It All Myself.”
“If I don’t personally type every word, how will people know it’s really me??”
There’s some healthy pride wrapped up in this hesitation, the kind that says, “I want to be taken seriously. I want to do it right. I want people to know I’m legit.”
I deeply respect that and applaud you for taking your position so seriously.
The Truth:
Friend, I say this with all the love in my heart and a gentle hand on your shoulder: You don’t have to prove your value by doing everything yourself.
Delegation is NOT a sign of weakness. It’s a sign of maturity, wisdom, sustainability, and dang good leadership. 💪
It means you know what’s worth your time and energy and what’s better handed off to someone gifted and equipped in that area.
You’re no less “authentic” if you don’t write every sentence yourself.
You’re not a fraud if you need help constructing a clear, compelling message.
You’re no less committed or invested in your target audience’s well-being.
Asking for help shows that you’re a good steward of your resources, your energy, and your unique giftings.
So if you’ve been carrying the weight of this myth, desperately holding out to prove your credibility, consider this your permission slip to lean on someone who can help you and has your best interest at heart. 🥹
Myth #7: “AI Can Do It Just as Well for Free.”
I know several smart, determined Christian business owners who’ve handed over ALL their marketing to ChatGPT – website copy, emails, captions, blogs, the whole shebang. They copy and paste it directly into their platform and publish content left and right.
And I get it! It’s free, fast, and super fun to play with. 😅
But here’s what happened to all of these wonderful Christian businesses:
📉 Their audience started to numb out to the impersonal, robotic tone.
📉 Google quietly lowered their rankings (yes, AI-only content triggers penalties).
📉 And they stayed stuck – plateaued, unheard, and wondering why all their new content didn’t generate growth.
😔
The Truth:
AI gives you great words, but it can’t give you strategy.
Or soul.
Or nuance.
Or any of the relational, emotional magic that makes people stop and listen.
It can’t read the room.
It can’t capture your heart for ministry or business.
It can’t sift through all the moving parts of your brand and figure out WHY certain messaging works and other elements fall flat.
And most importantly, it doesn’t know your people like you do.
Think of AI as a really enthusiastic intern. 🤓 Wildly helpful, for sure! But not running the show.
AI is a helpful tool in your toolbox, but a copywriter is the one who knows how to build the house. This is me assuming you want your business built on something better than recycled buzzwords and generic phrasing. 😅
(Oh, don’t get me started on the notorious ChatGPT phrase, “It’s not about ___, it’s about ___.” I sniff that junk out a mile away and immediately distrust that copy.)
A Christian copywriter – an emotional, relational, experienced human person – grasps the depth of your heart, your values, and the issues your audience experiences. Using AI as a tool in our arsenal, we create a personalized, unique message that moves people to action because they know you see, understand, and relate to them.
(And yes, I’ve got a whole blog dedicated to this topic coming out soon. Stay tuned! 👀)
Myth #8: “I Hired Someone Before and It Didn’t Go Well, So I'd Better Do It Myself.”
Oh man, yeah, this one stings. 😔 If this is your story, I’m genuinely so sorry.
Maybe the copy sounded salesy or robotic.
Maybe they ghosted you halfway through.
Maybe you paid good money and ended up rewriting it all at 2 am. 🥱
It’s frustrating, disheartening, and a serious breach of trust. No wonder you’d rather just do it yourself.
Whatever the case, I want you to hear this loud and clear: you’re not crazy for being cautious.
You should NOT have had to go through that rough experience. And just as importantly, you shouldn’t have to carry the weight of your marketing alone.
The Truth:
The right Christian copywriter is a partner, not a hindrance. 🤝
Not all copywriters are created equal.
I believe with my whole heart that Christian copywriting is a God-given calling – and that He’s using the words we write to make Himself known through businesses like yours.
So what sets me apart from the typical freelancer?
I don’t see this work as just a job to make money. It’s part of my ministry. I see every client partnership as an advancement of the Gospel. If you’re already speaking and spreading truth, I get to help you do it louder, further, and faster. Everything I do in this job is for the sake of honoring Christ and making Him known around the world. 🤲
I pray constantly over you (yes, you, my dear clients!), your business, the words I write, and God’s next steps for our partnership. My work is not “mine” – God’s the One who started it, has full control over it, fulfills it, and speaks through it. 🙏
Although I let the Spirit lead me in every decision, I’m well-equipped with strong training and experience in successful marketing strategies, expert SEO, and proven copywriting techniques. My clients get legitimate, measurable results, all to the glory of God. 📈
If you’re working hard to share Jesus through your business, it’s my honor and joy to come alongside you and help you do so more effectively. Seriously, sharing God’s truth with people who desperately need hope fires me up like nothing else! 🔥
I know you’ve been burned before, and I see you. I’m so sorry you experienced that – I wish I could undo that for you. 🥹 But I also want to gently encourage you that there is still hope, and God will make your next step clear.
So… Do You Really Need To Hire a Christian Copywriter?
Maybe not. It’s not for everyone all the time. 🤷
But maybe – and this is a pretty big maybe – strategic Christian copywriting is the very thing that helps you get unstuck and finally start moving in the direction you’ve prayed about for months.
Here’s what I know:
✅ You’re already doing a lot.
✅ You’re showing up.
✅ You care deeply about your people.
✅ You don’t need another thing on your plate.
✅ You need clarity, support, and a strategy that gets you results.
As a Christian copywriter, I get to jump into your process with you and turn that brilliant, God-given vision in your head into clear, compelling words that make people take action. And along the way, you’ll find you can breathe a little easier.
If any of the myths we talked about had you nodding along (or nervously laughing because you’ve thought every single one), you’re not alone! I’ve been right there too, and sometimes still am. 😅
Instead of letting these myths hold you back, take a baby step forward. You can schedule a free call with me via the link below, and we can talk about it all. We’ll have a casual, down-to-earth conversation about what’s working, what’s not, and whether copy could help lighten your load and get you some traction.
❌ You don’t have to be “ready.”
❌ You don’t have to have it all figured out.
You just need to be willing to take a baby step and trust the Lord to guide you.
I’m rooting for you, and I can’t wait to hear the special vision God put on your heart! 🙌
