What Is Christian Copywriting and Why Christian Businesses Can't Afford To Ignore It
Here’s what goes down 90% of the time when I tell someone I’m a Christian copywriter:
I get The Look. The polite but blank smile, brain scrambling for context cues.
Then a moment of awkward silence and nodding. I just ride it out. 😌
And then the inevitable question, “So what does that mean?”
It’s a hilarious routine I go through almost daily, and I don’t blame them! Copywriting is not self-explanatory. Someone once told me, “Oh you’re a copywriter? I could never work in law.” Huh…? I appreciate the vote of confidence, but the closest I get to law is writing terms and conditions no one reads. 😂
So if you’ve ever wondered what a copywriter does – or more importantly, why on earth you might need one for your Christian business – you’re in the right place, my friend.
Since you’re running a business (I assume you are, because you’re here, and you don’t have time to read random blogs for fun,) words are EVERYTHING.
✍️ Words are the bridge to your customers.
✍️ Words sell your products.
✍️ Words build trust.
✍️ Words turn casual scrollers into loyal buyers.
Copywriting is the art of crafting these powerful messages.
So if you’re not already using professional copywriting (no, ChatGPT doesn’t count,) you’re missing out on a valuable secret weapon to grow your business faster and with less stress. To put it bluntly, without a good copywriter, you’re leaving money, customers, and growth on the table. And no one wants that! 🫣
“Ok, but I already write my own content. Why would I need a copywriter?”
“I don’t want to sound salesy. I want my brand to feel authentic.”
“How could anyone else write better about my business than me?”
ALL great questions, and all ones I’ve asked too. And I’m excited to give you legit answers! 🙌
So let’s break it down. What exactly IS Christian copywriting, and why is it one of the smartest investments you can make for your business?
What Is NOT Christian Copywriting?
Let’s start by saving you some time (and frustration) and covering what good copywriting isn’t. Because I see many wonderful business owners working SO hard – spending precious time, money, and energy – on things they think will bring in more clients. But really they’re just spinning around in a dead-end strategy. 😣
So if you’ve tried any of these, don’t worry! But this is me giving you a friendly “Hey, I support you, so I don’t want you to waste your valuable time on this” nudge. 🤗
🚫 Copying and pasting from ChatGPT – Yeah, that’s right, I’m not afraid to start off with a bang. 💥 AI is a wonderful tool, but it’s just that: a tool. If you heavily rely on it for your marketing content, it sounds off. Generic. Like a polite stranger who has no idea who they’re talking to. Your business should sound like YOU – with all the personality, quirks, and values your brand is built on. **(Stay tuned for a blog about AI vs Copywriting soon!)
🚫 Trying to imitate your competitors – “Inspiring photography for life’s special moments.” That’s nice… but how is that different from the 87 other photographers saying the exact same thing? 🤔 How will your dream clients know you’re the right one for them? If your copy doesn’t stand out, neither will your business.
🚫 Posting random Instagram captions hoping they work – I know, I know, Instagram sucks up so much of our time. Sometimes you just want to post something quick and easy! But if all your posts sound something like, “Trust God in the waiting 🙏” with zero strategy, zero emotions, and zero calls to action, it’s not helping your business. Great copy inspires action. 💨
🚫 Long-winded journal entries about you – Have you ever landed on a website and felt like you’re reading someone’s life story before you even know what their point is? (If you’ve ever used online recipes, you know what I’m talking about. They’re the WORST at this! 😰) Good copy focuses on the reader, not the author. It’s clear, purposeful, and immediately useful to the reader.
If you read through those and feel like I NAILED everything you’ve been doing, first – breathe. It’s ok. 👍
You’re not doing anything wrong, you’re just missing the kind of messaging that actually resonates with your audience. And the solution isn’t writing more words – it’s using the words you already have more effectively.
What IS Christian Copywriting? (For Real This Time)
This is how I answer people (once we get through the uncomfortable chuckles 😅), “I write persuasive content to a target audience, driving a desired action like buying or subscribing.”
In other words, copywriting means crafting a message – perfectly designed to resonate with your ideal customer – that persuades that reader to take concrete action.
Copywriting is highly persuasive writing that requires unique skills and strategy
👉 Every sentence has a purpose.
👉 Every email, caption, ad, and product description funnels readers into an action step.
👉 It builds trust.
👉 Answers objections.
👉 Tells a story.
👉 Conveys emotion.
👉 Motivates action.
You might not be aware of it, but copywriting is everywhere. Billboards, ads on Facebook, those “Your Cart is Lonely” emails, and even the shampoo bottles you read in the shower.
Do any of these look familiar to you?
When it’s done right, good copywriting makes you stop, pay attention, and take action – even if that action is convincing yourself to get a bath bomb so you can feel like royalty while you soak. 💅
(Remember, the bath bomb is actually nothing but a lump of soap. 🧼 But they’d never say that! The WORDS convey a high-level, luxurious experience, appealing to the reader’s desire to feel beautiful and fancy.)
What Does Christian Copywriting Have To Do With Your Business?
Ok, real talk. Let’s open the hood of your business and see what you’re working with. 🧰
How’s your marketing going right now?
🔦 Social media posts – Do your captions make people stop scrolling and take direct action?
🔦 Emails – Are your subscribers actually excited to open them? Or does all your hard work sit in inbox purgatory next to expired coupons and Facebook’s endless birthday notifications?
🔦 Website headlines – Do they immediately tell visitors why you’re the perfect fit for them? Or does it take a little digging (and maybe some guessing) to figure out what you actually do?
🔦 Product descriptions: Do they just list features, or do they make customers want to buy the product (or at least put it on their Christmas list)?
If shining these little flashlights on your marketing made you pause and go, “...uh-oh,” don’t worry, you’re in good company!
Most business owners are TOO CLOSE to their own work to see where their messaging is falling flat. 🧑🦯 Of course, you know your business inside and out, but when you’re running the show, it’s almost impossible to step back and see your messaging the way your audience does.
Things that are so mind-numbingly OBVIOUS to you could very well come across as vague, impersonal, or just go straight over everyone’s heads. ✈️
That 👆 is why good copywriters are in such high demand! They take your passion and translate it into words that resonate deeply with your audience. A great copywriter makes every word work FOR you – bringing in the right people, building trust, and selling products left and right. They make your message clear, compelling, and impossible to ignore.
Does Christian Copywriting Really Make a Difference?
Oh, 100% YES. And I know, I know – of course I’d say that, I’m a copywriter. But let me show you what I mean. 👇
Imagine you’re scrolling through Instagram, half-awake when you see a post that makes you stop and read. It speaks directly to something you’ve been struggling with and sparks a “Wait, I really need this” moment. Boom. 💥 That’s good copywriting at work.
Or maybe you’re checking your email and deleting spam like a ninja. 🥷In your crazy cleaning spree, you suddenly find an email that sounds like it was written directly to you and offers a practical solution to a real problem you have. It’s not salesy, it’s relevant, and you actually enjoy reading it. 😍 That’s good copywriting.
Good Copywriting Is the Difference Between:
🚫 A website that people click away from in 5 seconds.
✅ A website that makes people feel understood, at home, and eager to work with you.
🚫 Social media posts that disappear into the algorithm void.
✅ Relatable, targeted posts that spark engagement, conversations, and conversions.
🚫 Emails left unread or deleted, just another annoying promo clogging their inbox.
✅ Emails subscribers get excited to open, read, and take action on.
🚫 Product descriptions that feel dry and forgettable.
✅ Descriptions that make people see themselves using (and loving) your products.
Can you see the difference?
🔊 Good Christian copywriting makes your business irresistible to the right people. 🔊
And no, you don’t have to sacrifice your voice or brand values to do it. A good copywriter will never make you sound like someone you’re not. They authentically reflect your unique story, message, and voice without resorting to pushy or salesy tactics. 🙅🏻♀️
And that, my friend, is how you grow your business without constantly hustling to get more clients.
What’s the Difference Between a Christian Copywriter vs. Other Copywriters?
The same difference between a Christian business owner and any others.
You’re a business owner – you have products to sell, services to offer, and bills to pay. But I’m guessing you didn’t start your business just to chase money. You started it because God put a unique passion on your heart and called you to step out in obedience. 💪 And HIS calling is the driving force behind your business.
That’s exactly why I’m here, too.
A good copywriter can piece together motivating words, create a solid call to action, or optimize your blogs for SEO. But will a non-believer understand the “why” behind your work? 🤔 Will their words truly capture and convey the Greater motive fueling your mission?
Let’s put it this way: would you hire a random person to represent your business at an event? Probably not. You’d want someone who shares your values and speaks your language.
That’s what a Christian copywriter does – except instead of speaking on a stage, we shape the words that market your brand to the world.
A Christian Copywriter Is Equipped To:
✍️ Capture God’s heart behind your business – because many customers resonate with it!
✍️Write copy aligned with your Christian values – so your message sounds like you, not like a desperate salesperson.
✍️Connect with your audience authentically – because people can sniff out verrrry quickly when something feels forced or fake.
That’s what Christian copywriters do. We’re out here just like you, obeying the Lord and making much of Him any chance we get!
We use our talents and skills to hold up a megaphone to Christian businesses and turn their volume on LOUD so more people hear them. 📣 And the more people hear them, the more people know God. Mission accomplished!
Final Thoughts (And a Little Encouragement for You)
You’re out there putting in the work, building, showing up for people, and trusting God with all of it. That’s no small thing. 👏 And I want to see you WIN!
Your business deserves words that work FOR you, not slow you down. Words that attract the right people, build desire, and bring in money – without making you sound like a pushy car salesman or corporate robot.
If writing (and rewriting) that kind of message feels overwhelming, frustrating, or like something you keep putting off – well, that’s exactly what God’s called me to do. 😊 And I love getting to do it!
So if you’ve been thinking, “Yeah I could probably use some help with this,” let’s talk about it! No pressure, no weird sales pitch, just a simple call to see what you need and if I can help.
